Feudalism was a social, economic, and political system where land was exchanged for loyalty, military service, and labor. In this system, a ruler or king granted land to nobles in return for their support, who then provided land to vassals (knights) in exchange for military service. Peasants or serfs worked the land and owed labor or goods in exchange for protection. While feudalism is most closely associated with medieval Europe, similar systems also existed in other regions, such as Japan.
